Gender Affirming Surgery Policy

We are proud to be the first—and currently the only— plastic Surgery clinic providing gender-affirming surgical care in Eugene, Oregon, such as top surgery.

Our mission is to support individuals seeking gender-affirming care with compassion, integrity, and clinical excellence!

Who is Eligible for Gender-affirming Options at Our Clinic?

In alignment with guidance from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), we do not offer gender-affirming surgeries on adolescents, including individuals under the age of 20. ASPS has stated that it does not endorse surgical treatment of adolescents with gender dysphoria due to limited long-term outcome data and the importance of careful multidisciplinary evaluation.

Our Gender Affirming Surgery Options in Eugene, Oregon

Gender-affirming care involves one or more surgeries that better align your physical appearance with your gender identity, helping you feel more like your true self in every way.

There are two primary types of top surgery: chest feminization, which creates a chest with a more feminine appearance, and chest masculinization, which does the opposite, reshaping the chest to create a more masculine appearance.

What Is the Top Surgery Recovery Process Like?

Both types of top surgery are serious procedures, so taking care of yourself is crucial. Showering should be avoided for at least the first few days after surgery. You'll typically wear a compression garment most of the time for approximately 6 weeks post-surgery, with showering being the only exception.

The recovery time can vary between patients, but expect to wait several weeks before resuming normal activities. You'll likely need to take 1 to 2 weeks off from work to heal and recover.

Do You Offer Any Gender-affirming Care for Patients under the Age of 20?

At our clinic, we require patients to be 20 years of age or older to undergo gender-affirming surgery. This policy is based on:

  • Our clinical judgment and experience

  • Current professional guidelines

  • A focus on ensuring long-term safety, satisfaction, and psychosocial readiness

We welcome patients to establish care with us before age 20 for consultation and care planning for after age 20. For individuals younger than 20 who are seeking surgery, we are happy to provide referrals to trusted centers with resources for adolescent care.

Additional Criteria for Surgery:

To be considered for surgery, patients must also:

  • Provide a letter of support from a qualified mental health professional who has evaluated the patient in accordance with WPATH standards

  • Demonstrate readiness and informed consent through a comprehensive consultation process

Insurance & Payment:

  • We accept most commercial insurance plans (please call for details)

  • We DO NOT accept OHP (Oregon Health Plan), Medicare, or Medicaid

  • Patients with non-participating insurance (including OHP/Medicare/Medicaid) may pursue surgery on a self-pay basis, provided all other clinical and administrative criteria are met

  • Please note: Since this type of care is mostly an insurance-covered procedure, the consultation is not complimentary and is billed through the insurance company.
