About Panniculectomy Surgery

Panniculectomy Surgery in Eugene, OR

Why Get a Panniculectomy?

A panniculectomy can help eliminate excess skin and body fat in the stomach area, which is called the "panniculus". This surgery is particularly popular among people with excess skin following significant weight loss, as it can remove excess skin and residual fat under the skin in problem areas to restore a natural look and improve function.

While this excess skin is often seen as more of a cosmetic issue, it can also lead to discomfort and hygiene issues:

  • Loose skin from weight loss can cause skin irritation and rashes.

  • Excess rolls of skin in the lower abdominal region can also be problematic for hygiene, because it can be difficult to clean between the folds.

  • Excess skin can lead to other issues, including back pain and mobility problems.

During a panniculectomy, the surgeon removes excess skin that can fold over and rub together, causing irritation, hygiene problems, body image issues, and other discomfort.

What Is the Difference Between Panniculectomy and Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)?

An abdominoplasty, also known as a tummy tuck, includes panniculectomy (removal of the overhanging excess skin and fat) but also includes tightening of the abdominal core muscles (repair of diastasis recti), lifting the pubic are (monsplasty), reconstruction of the belly button, and often Vaser liposuction to better shape the abdomen and provide excellent cosmetic outcomes.

While panniculectomy does not include these additional steps routinely, these can be added on if the patient is a good candidate for them.

Who Is a Good Candidate for a Panniculectomy?

If you have a significant buildup of overhanging excess skin and fatty tissue in your lower abdomen, panniculectomy surgery might be right for you.

In some cases, we may recommend the above-mentioned add-ons if you are a good candidate to optimize your outcome.

How Long Does Recovery Take, and What Is It Like?

While most patients can resume light duty activities as early as 2 weeks after surgery, the healing process and light duty restrictions could continue for up to 6-8 weeks. Like any other surgery, scars continue to lighten for up to 1-2 years.

It's important to follow the surgeon's instructions to ensure the recovery process from this surgical procedure goes smoothly.
